The McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT was established in 2000 by Patrick J. McGovern and Lore Harp McGovern. The McGoverns envisioned an institute whose ultimate goal would be to understand the human brain in health and disease.

Ten years later, the McGoverns expanded the McGovern neuroscience research network through the establishment of three new IDG/McGovern Institutes, at Tsinghua University, Peking University and Beijing Normal University.

McGovern Institute for Brain ResearchMcGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT

The McGovern Institute for Brain Research at MIT is led by a team of world-renowned neuroscientists committed to meeting two great challenges of modern science: understanding how the brain and mind work, and applying this knowledge to develop new ways to prevent or treat brain disorders. The director is Robert Desimone.

Established in 2012, the IDG/McGovern Institute for Brain Research at Peking University consists of neural and cognitive scientists committed to understanding the fundamental processes underlying brain function and brain disorders. Faculty members specialize in biology, cognitive sciences, psychology and psychiatry, with technologies ranging from traditional psychophysics, genetics, and molecular biology to manipulation of molecules and neurons to modern imaging of human brains. The director is Yi Rao.

IDG/McGovern Institute for Brain Research at Tsinghua University

The IDG/McGovern Institute for Brain Research at Tsinghua University was established in 2011 with a group of outstanding scientists in the fields of cellular, molecular, systems and behavioral neurosciences. Tsinghua researchers are focused on understanding of how the brain functions and discovering new ways to prevent or treat brain disorders. The director is Yi Zhong.
